Pangolins are amazing mammals, unique in their kind. Their main feature is the scaly cover that completely covers their body. These scales, consisting of keratin (the same protein as our nails and hair), serve as reliable protection from predators. When threatened, the pangolin curls up into a tight ball, leaving predators with only useless attempts to bite it.
Pangolins live in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. There are eight species of pangolins in the world, four of which live in Africa, and the rest in Asia. They lead a nocturnal lifestyle and feed mainly on ants and termites, for which they have developed a long and sticky tongue, which helps them get food from hard-to-reach places.
Unfortunately, pangolins are endangered due to illegal hunting and trade, as their scales are highly prized in traditional medicine in some countries, and their meat is considered a delicacy. Pangolins are currently listed as a protected species, but their population continues to decline.
