In K-Map, the don’t care conditions allow us to replace the empty cell of a K-Map to form larger group of cells.

A “Don’t-Care’’ cell is represented as “X”.

While forming groups of cells, “Don’t Care” cell can be treated as 1 or 0 or that cell can even be ignored.

This video provides you a simple explanation of Don't Care with three different examples.

Example 1: The first example involves don’t care cells in SOP form. Here, the given Boolean function specifies the minterms and the don’t cares denoted as d terms. We derive the simplified Boolean expression in SOP form using K-Map.

Example 2: The second example is a POS form Boolean function specified as πM and it involves don’t care cells. The given Boolean function specifies the maxterms and the don’t cares denoted as d terms. Here, we derive the simplified Boolean expression in POS form using K-Map.

Example 3: In this example, we need to find the final simplified expression in POS form but the given Boolean function is in SOP form and specifies the minterms.
We could easily derive the Boolean function in POS form. Just Keep the don’t cares as such and write the missing minterms as maxterms. Then, start minimizing the POS function using K-Map with the same simple steps.
