This Women's History Month, BestColleges editor Lorraine took a look at the history of women in higher education and the resistance by many schools, especially the prestigious colleges of the Ivy League, to going co-ed. Women have faced barriers in higher education since -- well, pretty much since the advent of higher education. But it is still surprising that, in America, the prestigious Ivy League schools were some of the last prominent holdouts resisting going co-ed. And wait 'til you hear what some male Ivy League alums said about the prospect of their college admitting women!
Today things look a bit different, of course. More than half of Ivy League students identify as female, and 6 out of 8 Ivy League presidents are women.
