Stanley Kirk Burrell (born March 30, 1962), also known as M C Hammer (or just Hammer), is an American hip hop recording artist, dancer, record producer, and entrepreneur. He enjoyed his greatest commercial success and popularity from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. He was the youngest of his parents' seven children. He used to spend as much time as possible at the Oakland Coliseum watching the Athletics play. If he couldn't watch the game, he'd hang out in the parking lot. One day, his two hobbies intersected in a way that had a tremendous impact on his life. He was dancing in the Coliseum parking lot when Charlie Finley, the Athletics' owner, came by. Finley made a comment about the young dancer's flair, which sparked a conversation and led to a job working in the team clubhouse and traveling as a bat boy. Burrell founded the Christian rap group Holy Ghost Boys in the 1980s and took on the stage name MC Hammer after. His big break came in 1988, when his charisma and dancing ability earned him a deal with Capitol Records. Let's Get It Started was his debut release with the label. The top 30 album sold more than two million copies thanks to singles like "Pump It Up" and "Turn This Mutha Out." The rapper's personal life worsened as a result of his expensive lifestyle throughout the years. However, by the late 1990s, M C Hammer had refocused on religion and stated that he had become an ordained preacher. After selling over 50 million albums and receiving three Grammy Awards, M C Hammer is still recognized as a tremendous musical entertainer.
