What is Lisinopril ( Zestril )?
Lisinopril is an antihypertensive and vasodilator. It belongs to a category of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. It competitively inhibits angiotensin converting enzyme, preventing conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, which is a potent vasoconstrictor. Clinical consequences include decreased sodium and fluid retention, decreased BP, and increased diuresis.
It is used in the management of Hypertension, Congestive heart failure and Myocardial Infarction.
It is available as 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg and 40 mg tablets.
The usual initial dose for hypertension: 10 mg/d. Can be increased to 20–40 mg/d (initiate therapy at 5 mg/d in patients receiving diuretics).
And for CHF the usual initial dose is 2.5–5 mg/d. Can be increased up to 40 mg/d.
And for improved survival after MI: 5 mg/d for 2 days, then 10 mg/d for 6 weeks.
