Click fraud (Invalid Clicks)on Google Ads is the frustrating scenario where you are paying for fraudulent clicks to your website. Fraudulent clicks are malicious clicks to your ads via one of 3 methods
Automated bots
envious competitors
click farms
All of which have differing levels of impact, depending on your business niche and whether or not you are advertising on search or display.
In this video we are going to confront the subject of click fraud and understand what it is, why it happens and what you as a business can do about it.
Let's first frame the conversation by looking at click fraud caused by bots
Did you know that it's estimated that only 48% of internet traffic is human, according to Imperva’s 2016 Bot Traffic Report.
It's worse than it sounds because much of that is normal everyday crawlers used in marketing from tools, which doesn't report into your analytics or actual traffic reporting
But it's estimated in the same report that 28% of traffic is from malicious bots which can inflate your traffic figures and of course cost you money if you're advertising
Especially in industries with high CPCs
As mentioned, Click fraud can also occur if a competitor decides to be malicious and click your ads over and over.
Which is something that can happen. I know it's easy to write this off as a minor issue, but it can have an impact on advertisers with low budgets, or in industry with high CPCs
And the final type of click fraud is through click farms, usually this occurs on the display network where webmasters who sell ad space on Google or indeed any ad network will use click farms to artificially inflate their traffic and ad impression figures to sell more ad space
