Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') is a small, evergreen perennial plant that is native to Japan. It has dark, glossy leaves that resemble blades of grass, which give it its common name. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the summer, followed by black berries. It is a low-maintenance plant that is well-suited for use in a variety of landscaping situations, such as rock gardens, borders, and as a ground cover.
To care for Black Mondo Grass, plant it in well-draining soil in a location that receives partial to full shade. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions but prefers moist, rich soil. Water the plant regularly, especially during dry periods. The plant is drought-tolerant once established, but consistent moisture will promote the best growth. Fertilize the plant in spring with a slow-release fertilizer, or with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
Black Mondo Grass can be propagated by dividing the clumps in the spring or by taking stem cuttings in the summer. It can also be propagated by seed, but it is slow to germinate and may take several months to sprout. The plant is not invasive and it is not known to have any significant pest or disease problems.
It's an ideal choice for small gardens, and perfect for mass plantings, rock gardens, or any spot where you want a low-growing, evergreen ground cover with dark foliage.
