Did you know that a student’s confidence level is a valid data point that you can use to inform your instruction? Hear from Christina Quarelli, Senior Curriculum Specialist at McGraw Hill, on using metacognitive checks to discover what students understand about a lesson.

Consider adding an extra layer of information to any work students turn in. Set up a color-coded legend wherever students turn in work. Every time students turn in work, have them rate themselves using a highlighter that corresponds to the options on the legend: (1) I can teach someone else; (2) I could use a little more practice (3) I need extra time with the teacher. When you collect the work, use the self-ratings to quickly identify needs for small-group instruction.

Metacognitive checks allow you to gauge students’ understanding, differentiate instruction, and promote student agency.
