Title: Metabolism, motivation, and the interpretation of BOLD “activation”
Abstract:
Activation-based aerobic glycolysis is an unusual and energetically-inefficient form of glucose metabolism that typically occurs in tandem with stimulus-elicited BOLD activity. Despite activation-based aerobic glycolysis being deeply related to functional neuroimaging, its function has remained unclear. In a new paper, we hypothesize that energetic-efficiency is necessarily sacrificed to support the efficient encoding of neural information. This hypothesis also allows us to interrogate how “brain activity” interpretations of BOLD neuroimaging might be reinterpreted in the broader context of brain metabolism and its function. In future work we plan to use combined functional PET and fMRI to quantify relationships between BOLD, glucose/oxygen metabolism, and information encoding. This work also fits into a larger project to ground computational models of affect and motivation in terms of biology and metabolism.
Bio:
Dr. Theriault’s research program focuses on biological factors underlying brain activity, and their potential for building an integrated understanding of neuroimaging, affective experience, and social behavior. He is interested in how brain metabolism relates to information processing, and how the metabolic costs of social environments are controlled by individuals within them. From this metabolically-oriented perspective, he has developed two connected lines of theoretical work, addressing (a) how brain glucose metabolism can help bridge levels of analysis, connecting bottom-up encoding to the metabolic processes underlying BOLD (blood-oxygen level-dependent) fMRI, and (b) how the metabolic/affective consequences of bottom-up encoding produce normative motivation—i.e. an anxious sense that you should behave as other people expect you to. He is currently an Experiential Artificial Intelligence Postdoctoral Fellow in the Roux Institute at Northeastern University.
