I've done some more work on 3D endless runner following some advice and suggestion. Most significant changes are:
Put the camera farther away and turned it a bit more, so the player character is smaller and you can see farther.
Added a wall in the back, as I thought the player was blending a bit into the background. Also reworked some obstacles. Now they make more sense in the "raid the castle top" scenario.
Made use of the Z dimension. Now you can move forth and back, enemies and powerups are also placed randomly on the Z axis, as is a new obstacle - the gate.
Added "rails" on the track so the player has a visual cue of their position on the Z axis.
Added screen shake on impact.
There are 3 pickups (not all featured in the video) - armour to protect you from obstacles, and two potions - one to speed you up and one to slow you down.
Added dust effect when running and jumping (to be fixed if I find a better sprite).
To fix:
Tweak the speed of slide animation, so the slide doesn't get too long on higher speeds.
The run-to-the left mode. I need to readjust the backgrounds and camera to fit the new angles and distances (There are 2 separate cameras for both modes, and backgrounds are a child of each camera, so they don't move when platform height changes).
