A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits a direct free kick foul inside their own 18-yard box, also known as the penalty area.

Rule 1 for Penalty Kick Rules for Goalie - The ball must be stationary on the penalty spot.

Rule 2 for Penalty Kick Rules in Soccer - The player taking the penalty kick must be clearly identified.

Rule 3 for Penalty Kick Rules in Football - The defending goalkeeper must have at least one foot on the goal line until the ball is kicked.

If the defending team including the goalkeeper commits a foul or breaks a rule and the penalty is missed/saved, the penalty is to be retaken.

Rule 4 - The players other than the penalty taker and goalkeeper must be outside the 18-yard box and its arc.

Not abiding by this rule means their may be a penalty retake.

Rule 5 for Penalty Kick in Football - The penalty taker must wait for the referee’s signal to take the penalty kick.

Usually, this is done by whistle, but occasionally by hand signal.

Rule 6 for Penalty Rules in Soccer - The player taking the penalty kick must kick the ball forward.

Backheeling is permitted provided the ball moves forward.

Rule 7 of Rules for Penalty Kicks - The ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves.

Placing your foot on it is not enough to be considered a touch.

Rule 8 - The penalty taker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player on either team.

This prevents the penalty taker from dribbling the ball forward for a closer shot.

Fun fact: The ref is allowed to add additional time for a penalty kick to be taken at the end of either half or extra time.

Also, a player cannot do a feint while kicking the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up.

However, feinting in the run-up is permitted and this is exactly what Neymar does in his run-ups.

If after the penalty kick has been taken, the kicker touches the ball again before it has touched another player, then an indirect free kick is awarded.

Passing a penalty kick is allowable as long as the ball goes forward and the player taking the penalty can't touch it for a second time.

When taking penalty kicks, avoid any fancy plays. Though you may have seen Messi pull one off before, you have a free kick from a few yards away from the net that based on research done by InStat on 100,000 penalty kicks, goes in 75% of the time, so take it.
