At the beginning of the archaic era, aristocrats played a leading role in Greek society. They owned all the levers of power; representatives of the nobility formed the governing bodies of the policy. Popular assemblies, in which ordinary citizens participated, were rarely convened and for the most part only approved decisions made by the councils, thus being an obedient tool in the hands of aristocrats. The predominant role was played by the aristocracy in the army. The situation of the rest of the population, the demos, was rather unenviable. Demos was mainly in varying degrees of political and economic dependence on the aristocrats. In some cases, this dependence grew into a real bondage.
