Perched above the Salmon Glacier, the Granduc Mine stands as a sizable copper mine situated upon a rocky ridge, nestled between a glacier and a cliff. It lies approximately 22 miles (35 km) to the north of Stewart, BC, at the northern extremity of Summit Lake. Operational between 1964 and 1984, the mine ceased operations due to a decline in copper prices.
Located within the District Municipality of Stewart, the mine and its associated camp are linked by an access road that connects to Hyder, Alaska. This site rests on the Portland Inlet and encompasses a vast expanse, including 17 km of access tunnels and a 54 km haulage road. Upgrades to these facilities commenced in June 2011.
Tragedy struck the mine on February 18, 1965, when a massive avalanche engulfed the mine camp, claiming the lives of 28 individuals. May they rest in peace. 🙏
