SSO (Силы специальных операций) was designed as a strategic-level asset, with primary missions would be foreign interventions, including sabotage and anti-terrorism operations. SSO forces do not belong to any branch of the Russian armed forces and are distinct from the Special Forces of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
The Forces are a highly mobile, well-trained and equipped, constant combat readiness special operations force of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In Syria, SSO appear to have engaged for two of their three primary missions. The core mission is battlefield reconnaissance, which in Syria especially involves guiding Russian artillery fires and air strikes. The second mission is carrying out special security missions. SSO were conducting force protection missions in an environment where the threat from terrorism was as great as conventional attack.
