expand for full breakdown.

more extended combo testing using the blackmetal knife and parry shield. the combo is performed successfully at times 0:15 under parry stagger and 1:15 without stagger. try watching these sections on 25% or 50% speed.

how to perform:
1. perform primary attack. optional: hold block
2. tap block at the end of primary 1, or continue to hold block if you were holding. wait for character to return to neutral block stance after a short delay, then trigger primary 2. on the knife, this is a tight time window, and hitting this window is the challenge.
3. if you timed it right, primary 2 will be replaced by a quick 1-2 double attack which costs only normal stamina of a primary. this replacement attack is unique to the knife and varies by weapon type.
4. hold primary attack to continue the combo, which will be 2x bonus damage on the 4th and 5th attack.

5-hit extended combo output:
1x damage and 1x stamina, forehand (normal primary 1)
1x + 1x damage and 1x stamina, forehand-backhand (bonus attack replacing primary 2)
2x damage and 1x stamina, backhand (primary 2, but now the 4th attack and with bonus 2x damage instead of normal 1x)
2x damage and 1x stamina, thrust (normal primary 3, now the 5th attack in the extended combo)

comparison to regular 3-hit primary combo, which is 1x, 1x, 2x:
damage output: 7x damage vs 4x, or 75% more damage
stamina cost: 4x stamina vs 3x, or 33% more stamina
damage-per-stamina rate: 1.75 vs 1.33, or 31.5% more efficient on stamina per damage dealt

time: 1.8 vs 1.2 seconds, or 50% longer
DPS: 3.88 vs 3.33, or 16% more DPS

the 5 hits are at a faster rate on average but it takes longer to complete the whole combo. i came up with the above times by watching at 0.25 speed and hand-timing between the first and last attacks, then dividing by 4. then, dividing the 7x and 4x damage by the respective times to get DPS.

as cool as this new combo is, even setting aside the learning curve, its debatable as to whether this is a strict improvement. it's definitely more efficient on damage-to-stamina (31%) if you are banging away at a safe, isolated target. but, sometimes you may not have enough time, or enough stamina, to complete the full combo. or your target may die before you complete it. or, you or the target may be sliding up/down a hill, or the target is getting knocked back and out of range, etc. the knife's low knockback works to its advantage here, but i think we all have experience with failing to complete a combo due to the target moving around, even if staggered. simply put, the longer the combo is, the lower chance you have of completing it in the context of a real fight.

given the execution difficulty and the fact that time is money when it comes to defense and offense, i am not sure a 16% DPS improvement is that noteworthy. to me, this is something to mix in for fun and challenge, not necessarily as a matter of optimization. but, i may be saying that because i am not experienced using it, or using knives, for that matter. more analysis is needed.

0:00 extended combo under parry stagger
1:05 regular combo under parry stagger
1:16 extended combo without stagger
