In honor of SportsMakers: Game Changers, we salute Dr. Harry Edwards, leading sports sociologist, civil rights activist, and former college athlete. Edwards speaks about trailblazing black athlete activists such as Jackie Robinson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Arthur Ashe, Bill Russell, Jim Brown, Rose Robinson, and more.

While studying sociology at San Jose State University, Edwards was a discus thrower on the track team, which consisted of predominantly white student athletes. In 1966, Edwards went on to receive his M.A. degree in sociology from Cornell University where he was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and in 1970, he received his Ph.D. degree in sociology from Cornell where he helped to found United Black Students for Action and the Olympic Project for Human Rights. With his Olympic Project, Edwards was one of the architects of the legendary Black Power Salute protest at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, both African American San Jose State College athletes.

In 1970, Edwards became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley where he taught courses on race relations and the sociology of sports. In 1985, he was hired as a consultant for the San Francisco 49ers where he developed the Minority Coaches Internship and Outreach Program with Coach Bill Walsh. Two years later, he served as special assistant to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to recruit black talent for front-office positions. From 1987 through 1995, Edwards worked with the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association, specializing in player personnel counseling and programs. The programs and methods he developed for dealing with challenges facing professional football players were adopted by the entire National Football League in 1992 and in 2000, he retired from the University of California, Berkeley. Edwards has authored countless articles as well as three books: “The Revolt of the Black Athlete” (1969), “The Struggle That Must Be: An Autobiography” (1980), and “Sociology of Sport” (1973).
