Alcohol-induced blackouts refer to the periods when individuals cannot recall the events that took place while they were intoxicated. They represent episodes of amnesia caused by alcohol. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), blackouts happen when someone consumes enough alcohol to temporarily block the transfer of memories from short-term to long-term storage—known as memory consolidation—in an area of the brain called the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the part of the human brain that converts experiences and our sensory data into memories.
