In this video, we delve into the nuances between combined screening and NIPT - two critical blood tests offered during pregnancy to screen for chromosomal abnormalities.
A first-trimester screening, combined screening melds a blood test with an ultrasound to evaluate the risk of Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome in the baby. It involves measuring two specific pregnancy-associated proteins and the hormone hCG in the blood, alongside an ultrasound assessment of the nuchal translucency (NT) thickness at the back of the baby's neck.
NIPT, a more recent advancement, is a blood test that can be performed from as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy. It analyzes the baby's DNA found in the mother's bloodstream, originating from the placenta. NIPT is used to screen for the same chromosomal syndromes as combined screening.
