This project combines a Raspberry Pi Pico with a Pololu Zumo robot chassis. This video goes through the design stages and initial build stages of this robot.

To see how I would program the encoders on this, my book Robotics at Home with Raspberry Pi Pico has chapters on working with them. It is on Amazon at https://packt.link/5swS2.

Parts (so far in the project):
Raspberry Pi Pico
Pololu Zumo - a tiny tracked robot
Adafruit N20 motors with Encoders
Furniture 90 degree bracket for sensor mount (this may change)
TB6612fng motor controller (not a DRV8833 - although that would do)
2x VL53L0x distance sensors (might need to change the face plate and face them out)
2 x Pimoroni 5x5 LED matrix breakout.
Pololu 6 way line/reflectance sensor.

00:01:05 The parts - Pololu Zumo chassis and the changes I had to make to it.
00:02:12 The Plan - what further sensors would I need?
00:03:35 Fitting the Pololu line following sensor
00:04:15 The faceplate - designing with FreeCAD, cutting from Styrene and assembling.
00:07:10 Electronics For the Faceplate - sketch and then Fritzing
00:08:20 Main electronics - Fritzing and laying out on perfboard.
00:11:14 Outtro - what comes next on this robot?
