Mastodon is a social media platform very similar to Twitter. But unlike Twitter, it’s not owned by any one person or any one company. Instead, it’s a decentralized platform and it’s open source.
You can create a profile, post text, photos, and videos, and follow other users.
Mastodon is not a single website. To use it, you need to make an account with a provider—we call them servers or instances—that lets you connect with other people across Mastodon.
Anyone can create these servers and they can create their own rules around that server.
You can also cross-communicate between servers, not just in the one you created or joined.
To use Mastodon, you can download the official app for iOS and Android.
Mastodon called their posts toots and you have a 500-character limit.
There is also something called a fediverse. That’s basically all the servers on Mastodon.
