Today was a very competitive day! I'm a bit frustrated, not that I didn't take 1st place, but that I didn't take 2nd. The man who took 1st is a National Level competitor with a very nicely-prepped car that I really wasn't going to have a hope of beating, so my focus was on taking 2nd, since my next-closest competitor was someone I beat by 4/10ths at the first event this year. I did manage to hold him at bay all day, and even improved my lead on my last run (which is this video), but on his last run after me, he managed to eek out a nearly 2/10ths second advantage over me to bump me into 3rd place!
I relish the competition, and he will definitely be a fun competitor this season. The reason I'm frustrated really has to do with the fact that I think I could have held down 2nd place had I not been lazy about my setup. I'm not used to having close competition (in 2016 and 2017 I basically walked away with wins at just about every event), and that means I'm not used to needing to maximize my car's setup to ensure victory. After my year-long hiatus, I'd completely forgotten what my ideal setup was for autocrossing. Rather than look at my notes from previous years of competition, I just took a random guess at settings for the suspension, and tire pressures, and "made do" these last two events. Today, I struggled with a bit of understeer, and it wasn't until after the event, when I got bumped to third, that I really bothered to take the time to think about my runs. It reminded me that I had this same problem before, and I had resolved it by running different tire pressures front and rear (vs the square pressures I've been running so far this year.) Basically, I was too lazy to fix the understeer, and I do feel that contributed to my being bumped to third.
Oh well, lesson learned! I'll be reviewing my notes from 2017, so I'll have a better setup at the next event, and hopefully it will help hold this new competitor at bay (if only barely!)
