One of my bugbears with Mac is the need to press CMD and Q to quit each application individually rather than having a single key combination to close all applications at once. The quickest way I’ve found to do this is to press CMD and Tab followed by CMD and Q to cycle through each app one by one to close them. The trick here is to keep your finger or thumb on the CMD key and then alternate between pressing Tab and Q. The nice thing about this solution is that you’ll be prompted to save any changes you’ve made in each application before the app shuts down.

A more drastic approach, which you’d usually only use if your mac was frozen or having issues, is to press CMD, ALT and Esc on your keyboard, to bring up the Force Quit window. CMD and A will select all the apps you have open and pressing Enter will force them to shut down. This method won’t save any changes you’ve made, so I don’t recommend using it.

My preferred method is to use a keyboard combination, which I create using the shortcuts app. In the shortcuts app, press on the plus icon to create a new shortcut. In the search box type the word Quit, and drag the Quit app script to your workflow. We then want to change App to read All Apps, and if we click on More, the prompt to Save Changes should already be ticked. I’ll be adding my shortcut to the Dock so I’ll change the name and the icon to be more identifiable. Then it’s just a matter of clicking on the information icon to assign a key combination by clicking on Add Keyboard Shortcut. When I did this it actually added another script to the start of my workflow, which I think is a bug. I’m not sure this is meant to happen. As you can see it wants to add the shortcut as a Quick Action menu option. If you don’t want this, which I don’t, just untick these two boxes and the additional script should disappear. You can then add your key combination by pressing the keys on your keyboard. It’s important to try and use a combination that is not already in use. So I have gone for Control, Option and Q. Close the Window and your shortcut should now be listed with your other shortcuts. If you want to add it to your Dock, right click and choose add to Dock.I’ll move it so it’s next to my Finder app. Now when I have lots of apps open, I can simply click my key combination, and my apps will begin to close. Any apps where I made a change will prompt me to save those changes before they shut down. And there we are. It works just as well if I click on the shortcut in my Dock, like so.
