To express a deviation from a pure sine wave usually the term harmonics is used. It is a power quality problem which is defined as the distortions in the voltage and current waveforms caused by the overlapping of the standard waves at 50 Hz with waves at other frequencies.
Specifically, a harmonic of a sinusoidal wave (voltage and current)is an integral multiple of the fundamental frequency of the wave.
How to quantify it ?
Harmonics Distortions can be quantified in terms of total harmonic distortions (THD). It is also known as harmonic factor (HF).
The total harmonic distortion can be defined as a measure of the percentage of distortion caused by the presence of all harmonics as compared to the original wave (either in voltage or current).
Mathematically it is given as the ratio of the root mean square (rms) value of the harmonic content (non-fundamental) to the rms value of the fundamental quantity, expressed as a percentage of the fundamental.
Without DC Component
The current signal consists of a 50 Hz fundamental with amplitude 100 and five odd-numbered harmonics at 150, 250, 350, 450 and 550 Hz with amplitudes 20, 16, 10, 4 and 2. Determine the THD.
