Primary Pumps
Location: Directly connected to the chillers themselves.
Purpose: Circulate chilled water through the chiller's evaporator, where heat from the building is absorbed, and then back to the chillers.
Flow Rate: Often designed with a constant flow rate to ensure the chillers operate at their optimal efficiency.
Types: Can be dedicated (one pump per chiller) or headered (multiple pumps serving multiple chillers).
Secondary Pumps
Location: Part of the separate chilled water distribution loop to the building.
Purpose: Distribute the chilled water from the primary loop out to the various air handling units, fan coil units, or other cooling equipment throughout the building.
Flow Rate: Designed with variable speed drives (VFDs) to precisely adjust flow as cooling demand in the building changes.
Control: Operate based on a differential pressure setpoint within the distribution loop, ensuring that there's a consistent supply of chilled water at the needed locations.
