X flare last night! And we've had a couple of recent solar storm events that caused geomagnetic storms on Earth … and auroras at lower-than-usual latitudes. During these events, sun watchers wondered, were Earth's power grids affected? Were there outages? Shawn Dahl is a spaceweather forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, CO. He'll be speaking with EarthSky's founder Deborah Byrd about the solar flare warning system, used by NOAA and partners to try to keep U.S. electric grids up and running. Did that system work during the "severe" geomagnetic storm last May? How did it work in late September, during an "extreme" geomagnetic storm, when people again saw a magnificent auroral display? Join us at 12:15 p.m. CDT (17:15 UTC) on Friday, November 1!
