Bagging: waiting near last place for good items (bullet bill, shock/lightning, star, golden mushroom, mushrooms) and using them to make a comeback. This lets you get to 10 coins and stay away from attack items, and you can potentially dodge the shock or do item smuggling.
Running/frontrunning: Driving as fast as you can at all times to try and stay near the front. This is the normal way to play mario kart, but your items will be worse on average, and you will be susceptible to attack items like red shells, green shells, fire flower, boomerang, bananas.
