The people in this harbor asked me to create a depth map for them. In order to do so, I had to map the area twice - once before flushing and once after - as they planned to use a special flushing/digging ship to remove sediment and restore the original water depths.
The river Weser is approximately 14m deep and carries a significant amount of water, including sediment, with every tide. The water level changes by up to 4 meters on a normal tide, and up to 6 meters or more on spring tides or after a storm. To keep the shipping traffic running smoothly, the river is frequently dredged with large flushing/digging ships. Similarly, the harbors in this area face the same issue as sediment tends to accumulate in the lower-current areas, necessitating dredging every one or two years to keep the harbors operational.
The problem is so significant that a sandbank can appear after a single tide, and the maps are not consistently updated in a timely fashion. Typically, one can identify the low and high spots in the harbor, but navigating these areas necessitates both experience and luck. However, after two years, the sandbanks become so troublesome that the harbor must be dredged again.
