Details:
Before smartphones became ubiquitous, there was a product category known as UMPCs (ultra mobile personal computers) which became available in the late 2000s. The concept of a handheld mini computer with the power to run desktop class operating systems, offered a glimpse into the future of portable computing. Such products included the Samsung Q1, Sony Vaio UX Micro PC series, and the OQO Model 2. Additional models were made by Fujitsu, Sharp, and Toshiba.
Unfortunately, while cool, these devices were extremely expensive for their time...ultimately never managing to outperform PDAs or laptops/netbooks in popularity. Still, the concept was futuristic and draws parallel to today's products like the Steam Deck, GPD Pocket, and smartphones with Desktop modes.
For a while though, as a "budget" alternative to the original UMPCs (running on Windows), there were "MIDs" (mobile Internet device) - which borrowed the form factor and offered a middle ground between PDAs and UMPCs. Popular examples came from Archos and Nokia (770, N800, N810 Internet Tablet, N900).
In this video, we're taking a closer look at one which device, the ITELCO IDOL (TIM) MID, which was a carrier exclusive featuring GSM cellular connectivity in addition to WiFi and Bluetooth. In international markets, the design and hardware is almost identical to other MIDs like the Aigo P8860, Gigabyte M528, and BenQ S6. What made all of these units interesting is that they all used an x86 Intel Atom processor - meaning that although they came with Linux out of the box, it's possible to run Windows XP as well.
Otherwise, this unit came with a desktop class, Firefox-based web browser, OpenOffice document editing suite software, front + rear facing cameras, and a slide out, full qwerty keyboard...
