This week's speaker is Avindra Nath of the NIH's National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS).
All seven human coronaviruses have resulted in neurological complications although the full extent of these manifestations are now best characterized with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Even though evidence for direct infection by the virus of brain cells is weak and occurs only rarely, the vast majority of the infected patients manifest some form of neurological symptoms. In severely ill patients, the brain is affected due to hypoxia and multi-organ involvement, however, patients may develop complications affecting the entire neuro-axis. Some develop during the acute virus infection that includes stroke and seizures, others may develop post-viral syndromes. The talk will discuss these various manifestations and the likely pathophysiological mechanisms
