What happened when India was partitioned in 1947?? How did India and Pakistan develop such a difficult relationship??
Up until 1947, India had been part of the British Raj. But with India's move towards independence, the Brits, on their way out, decided to divide parts of their former territory- along religious sectarian lines, giving majority Muslim-majority territories to Pakistan, and majority Hindu territories to India.
This had dramatic and violent repercussions, as some people on either side (Muslims in India, Hindus in Pakistan) suddenly found their religious community to be part of the minority. A massive migration occurred, with around 14 million people moving in one direction or the other, in search of the safety of their community.
The violence occurred not only at the small community level, but also, eventually, the two states intervening to protect their people. We show some of those moments in this video, along with the comedically unexpected intervention of the USA and USSR, acting together for once!
