Okay, time to update old operating system installation guide to 2020/2021. With the launch of the new Comet Lake CPUs and Z490 motherboards, the procedure is slightly different, but much better this time. Now we can finally get all of the USBs working, so even the Intel USB Ports so that means the entire rear I/O, and even the front USB ports of your case. The installation method is pretty much identical for Windows 7, so you can use this video as a guide to install Windows 7 as well with an Intel Comet Lake CPU and a Z490 motherboard.
You can install the old operating system (OS) with either DVD or USB. Using an optical drive is much easier, because USB hasn't been natively supported on newer platforms (Z170 and newer) with Windows 7 or older. When installing from a DVD the actual process is very straight forward, the only thing you lack is the USB functionality after you land on the desktop. To overcome that, we can integrate the USB drivers along with the required AHCI drivers to the Windows XP/Server 2003/Windows 7 installation media when we recreate the ISO file. You can do that easily with the software called NLite for Windows XP and Server 2003, for Windows 7 and newer OS use NTLite.
Just follow my steps I show on the video to prepare the installation media to install the OS with a Z490 system. If your motherboard has a 3rd party storage controller (Asmedia) I recommend you try the AHCI drivers for those first, as they have more flexibility than Intel ports, for example Asmedia can run 64-bit XP, but Intel ports can not at least yet as far as I know. After integrating the AHCI and USB drivers with NLite we just build the ISO from the extracted installation media files.
Before making the ISO file I recommend you put the "USBD.sys" file AND the Z490 USB drivers to the ROOT of the installation media folder just in case if everything doesn't work out fully, so that you can fix the situation after landing on the desktop. USBD.sys is a required file in the "Drivers" subfolder of System32 or SysWOW64 folder for USB ports to work fully, and it is often missing when installing Windows XP or Server 2003 with modern hardware like on Intel LGA1151 or LGA1200 platforms. To overcome that issue, just put the file with USB drivers to the root of the ISO file so that you can easily move the file to the Drivers folder after you get to the desktop. I recommend not putting the file to the "I386" folder as it can cause a USBHUB.sys error during the installation process.
We also have to flash an XP compatible BIOS to the motherboard to avoid ACPI Bluescreen of death (BSOD) when booting the OS. I recommend you flash the XP compatible bios to the 2nd or 3rd BIOS on your mainboard, assuming your motherboard has at least two BIOS chips. I recommend you use a retail BIOS with XP support for the installation to avoid any problems that can happen if you use a special BIOS with most of the microcodes removed. After the Spectre and Meltdown patches those microcodes are usually removed from XOC BIOSes to boost performance. After flashing the BIOS just change Boot Mode Select to Legacy and you can install the XP just like any other OS.
