Infinitives are normally used with "to" after a number of common main verbs, but in some cases, we use the infinitive without "to"
We use the infinitive without "to".
1. After modal auxiliary verbs (will, shall, would, should, can, could, may, might, must)
He could drive a car before he left school. (NOT he could to drive...)
2. After certain verbs like watch, see, let, make and hear
I saw you put the wallet in your bag.
Nothing will make me change my mind. (NOT I saw you to put...)
He agreed to let us live in the cottage rent-free. (NOT he agreed to let us to live...)
Did you hear him go upstairs? (NOT Did you hear him to go...)
She watched him disappear into the cafe. (NOT She watched him to disappear...)
The infinitive is used with "to" in passive versions of these structures.
We were made to learn ten new words every day.
3. After why
Why worry? There's nothing you can do to change the situation.
4. After rather, better and had better
We'd better leave now or we'll miss the bus.
