What is difference between Phoneme, Phone and Allophone in Phonetics and Phonology?
Phoneme:
It is the smallest unit of sound in a language which can distinguish two words.
For example: . In English the word /pan/ and /ban/ differ only in their initial sounds /p/ and /b/.
Phone:
Individual sounds as they occur in speech. Phones are grouped by PHONEMIC ANALYSIS into the distinctive sound units or Phonemes of a language.
Allophone:
Allophone is phonetic variation of phoneme.
