UPDATE: try using the GoPro Cineform preset instead of the one I select in this video (see the pinned comment for more details).

------------------------------

One of the best ways to speed up your workflow and work with large resolution files (i.e. 4K) in Premiere Pro CC is by using proxy files. Proxy files are a substitute for using the high-resolution files whilst editing, which means the high res footage is converted into low res footage, which also means that less processing power is needed to playback the footage and scrub the timeline smoothly without dropping any frames.

There are two ways to link proxy files depending on what stage you are in your project.

CREATE PROXY FILE WHILST IMPORTING FOOTAGE

If you're starting a new project and you haven't imported any footage yet, here's what you can do:

1) Open the Media Browser
2) Select the wrench icon (i.e. Settings)
Note: this will open a dialog box
3) In the dialog box, you will see the Ingest Settings tab, make sure it's selected
4) Turn on Ingest (a tick will appear in the box)
5) In the dropdown next to it, select 'Create Proxies'
5) In the Preset dropdown menu choose the resolution you want to use - GoPro Cineform is advised
6) In the Proxy Destination dropdown chose where to put your proxy files (I choose Same as Project)
Note: It's best not to put the proxy files in the same directory as the original footage. This article explains why (see Attach Proxies and Reconnect Full Resolution Media) https://tinyurl.com/mgt4zoe
7) Hit OK
8) From the Media Browser, drag your footage into your project panel
Note: Adobe Media Encoder will now open and start converting your files. Whilst it does this you can continue to keep working with the high-resolution files with no interference.
9) When Media Encoder has finished, your proxy file is available
10) In the Program monitor, make sure to add the Proxies Toggle icon (   • How to use PROXIES in Premiere Pro CC...  )
11) Toggle the proxies on and off (it's on with the icon goes blue)
12) That's it.

CREATE PROXY FILE AFTER FOOTAGE HAS BEEN IMPORTED
(Skip to this point in the video    • How to use PROXIES in Premiere Pro CC...  )

If you've already imported the footage into your workspace then you can simply do the following in order to create a proxy file from that footage:

1) In the projects panel, right-click the relevant video clip
2) Select Proxy
3) Select Create Proxies...
Note: A dialog box will open
4) Select the relevant preset (I go for 1280x720 H.264)
5) Chose the location for your proxy file (I choose to keep in with the project file)
6) Click OK
Note: Adobe Media Encoder will now open and start converting your files. Whilst it does this you can continue to keep working with the high-resolution files with no interference.
7) When Media Encoder has finished, your proxy file is available
10) In the Program monitor, make sure to add the Proxies Toggle icon
11) Toggle the proxies on and off (it's on with the icon goes blue)
12) That's it.
