With significant advances in Artificial Intelligence over the last two decades, can we safely turn government decision-making over to computers?
The Robodebt scandal says NO. Yet this is only one example of the widespread automation of decision-making in government today - decisions that can have devastating effects on vulnerable people who are least able to challenge them.
Professor Yee-Fui Ng is an Associate Professor in Law and Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation at Monash University, Australia. Her research centres on the intersection between public law and politics, focussing on enhancing executive accountability. Her published works include: The Rise of Political Advisors in the Westminster System (Routledge, 2018) and Ministerial Advisers in Australia: The Modern Legal Context (Federation Press, 2016), a Holt Prize finalist.
