The Halesi-Maratika caves(Haleshi Mahadev temple) are located next to the village of Mahadevstjan, in the Khotang District of eastern Nepalseal. The temple is a very popular pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. The caves are called the Halesi Mahadev Temple by Hindus, who associate them with Mahadeva, while they are known as the sacred place to Buddhists, who consider them to be the caves associated with the legend of Guru Padmasambhava.
हलेसीलाई तिब्बती भाषामा मरातिका वा 'चि बा मेथार बाईद' को अर्थ "मृत्युबाट हटाइने", र भनेर चिनिन्छ। यो ठाउँ इतिहास, पौराणिक कथा र पवित्र भूविज्ञानमा धनी छ, यो बौद्ध र हिन्दू दुवैको लागि एक प्रमुख पवित्र स्थान हो। विशेष गरी तिब्बती बौद्ध यात्रीहरूका लागि, यो अमरताको स्थान हो, संसारको छवटा सर्वोच्च तीर्थस्थलहरू मध्ये यो एकहो। यो त्यो ठाउँ हो जहाँ महान् गुरु, दोस्रो बुद्ध पद्मसम्भव र डाकिनी मन्दरवाले अमर जीवनको अनुभूति प्राप्त गर्नुभएको थियो। मरातिकालाई तीन रक्षक मन्जुश्री, वज्रपाणी र अवलोकितेश्वरको परिवारले पनि आशीर्वाद दिएको थियो। धेरै वर्षदेखि माराटिकाका पवित्र गुफाहरू लामो जीवनको अभ्यासमा संलग्न हुन खोज्ने बौद्ध धर्मावलम्बीहरूको लागि महत्त्वपूर्ण तीर्थस्थल भएको छ।
Maratika or ‘Chi ba mthar byed’ in Tibetan means “eliminates from death”, and is known as Halesi or “literally astonishing”. The place is rich in history, mythology and sacred geology despite its great isolation, it is a major holy place for both Buddhists and Hindus. For Tibetan Buddhists in particular, it is the site of immortality, one of the six supreme pilgrimage sites in the world. It is the place where the great master, the second Buddha Padmasambhava and Dakini Mandarava obtained the realization of immortal life. Maratika was also blessed by the family of three protectors Manjushri, Vajrapani, and Avalokitesavara. Temal i.e. Ter Mal, according to Buddhist Mythology is a place of Treasures. Temal is a blessed and gifted place of Guru Rinpoche. It is also the home of the "Buddha Chitta Mala" (prayer mantra wood-bead garland). Many decades back, Temal used to be a place of demons. There was a demon/ monster named "Yaksha Nagpo", whose whole body used to be a 'human body'; except his head was of a 'snake'. The monster used to worry and fear the whole villagers by eating their little children every day. Guru Rinpoche who was meditating at Pharping heard about all those incidents and felt that 'Temal' needs him to protect the people and villages. History has the story that Guru came to the village and vanished the monster.
