Structuring your URL's for your blog is often times over looked, but it is important because the "perma" in permalink stands for permanent. As in, you're not supposed to change this whenever you feel like.
My top 3 suggestions for SEO friendly URL's are as follows:
/post-name/ is a great choice if you're blog is going to be under 1000 posts. It's clean and easy to understand for both search engines and your visitors.
/blog/post-name/ is a great choice if you're running an ecommerce website or any website that has a core offering that is not blog content.
/category/post-name/ is perfect for large content websites with over 1000 blog posts. Think of sites like ThePennyHoarder.com that produce a wide array of content on multiple topics.
/date/post-name this is fine if you're publishing time sensitive content. Otherwise dates are one of the worst structures possible for a blog.
