Since 2009, I have committed to releasing at least one album of music each year. I do it as a way to track my progress, as well as to journal my life experiences in a musical format.
For this album, I stuck with my usual formula of making loop-based compositions, and tried to incorporate aspects of different genres of music that I enjoy. I usually don't approach writing a song with any particular idea in mind of what it will sound like. I just try to focus on what I am feeling, and channel that into sound. A lot of the creation is spur of the moment, and to capture and preserve that essence, I try not to obsess over what synth sounds I will use - I just kind of go with the first thing that comes to mind, and stick with that. Same with the melodies and the rest of the instrumentation. In a way, it's kind of like stream of consciousness music, with sections repeated to establish familiarity and make the creations more like a familiar piece of modern music.
I drew a lot of inspiration for this album from video game music, vampire-themed shows and anime series, 80s alternative/new wave such as Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode, 90s house/dance/hip-hop music, modern pop music, shoegaze bands, Radiohead, Garbage, and Aphex Twin.
In trying to distill the experiences of the year 2022 into sound, I was aiming for an album that sounded both foreboding/ominous, but also hopeful and forward-marching. I had many experiences this year that taught me a lot about myself and other people. I definitely feel like I went through the wringer in 2022. I conjured up every ounce of energy, motivation, drive, and optimism I had within me to try to create something great. And once it was over, even though the project had been completed, I was left feeling disappointed, regretful in certain ways, and a little bit baffled by the actions of others which I had little to no control over. I spent 8 months planning this project with a team of people, and had to make many sacrifices to make it possible. Unfortunately, some people didn't understand our mission or what we were trying to accomplish, and many things ended up getting in the way which distracted us from that mission. Nevertheless, we did what we set out to do and carried the project to the finish line.
In the months following that project, I felt jaded and like I might just give up on that particular direction I was following in life. After taking a short break in August, I got right into working on new music. I decided to name the album "Alucard" because I sort of felt like a vampire hiding away in my castle after all the events of the year. I felt like maybe I'd just become reclusive again, because in trying to share my time, energy, passions, and resources with others, it seemed like many didn't realize or appreciate the sacrifices that had to be made, and instead took advantage of me. I began to question why I ever started branching outside of myself and trying to connect with people when I've always sort of felt like an outsider. Writing this album helped me come to my senses, and realize that this dream is not dead yet. Like the vampire Alucard, it is just temporarily chained up in the basement of a heavily fortified castle, the secret weapon waiting to be released when the time is right.
