American Fast Food in SANCTIONED Moscow
In the 1990s, as Russia’s economy opened up to capitalism, Western companies rushed to Moscow to take advantage of a new post-communist world. Among these companies, of course, were Western fast food joints. McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Subway and Domino’s all eventually opened restaurants in the Russian capital.
The people here loved it. I’m sure you’ve all seen the scenes of thousands of Russians queueing up for their first taste of a Big Mac.
In 2024, 3 decades later, life is, of course, much different. Russia has been a capitalist country for more than 30 years, and the economy has undoubtedly changed. Even more so since 2022, following the start the so-called “Special Military Operation,” which led to hundreds of western companies opting to leave the country.
It’s currently February, and I’m in the centre of Moscow. Today I’m going to take you on a a guided tour through the city, via five different Western fast food brands.
