DEBUSSY Clair de lune by concert pianist Stephanie ELBAZ
"Clair de lune" (Moonlight) is the third movement of the Debussy's Bergamasque Suite, which was initially composed around 1890. The original title of this masterpiece was "promenade sentimentale" (sentimental stroll), in reference to the eponymous poem from Paul Verlaine. This poem describes a lonely walker, who suffers from a huge sadness that gets lost in the sunset of a melancholic landscape.
Around 1905, Debussy reworked his Bergamasque Suite. The "promenade sentimentale" became "clair de lune" on that occasion, in reference to an eponymous poem from Paul Verlaine once more. Thus, the combination of those two poems inspired to Debussy a magic and mysterious piece, which is not exactly an impressionist depiction of a moonlight as often viewed, but rather the expression of a melancholic lonely walk under the moonlight.
In tribute to Debussy, a great composer who left us one century ago on March 25th. With all my admiration and my love for his music.
