Almost fifty years after Michael Myers originally terrorized theaters, the king of all 70s slashers is making his way back to the big screen. John Carpenter’s s Haddonfield horror movie Halloween 1978 is returning to theaters for a limited time for the Halloween 2024 season.
Starring scream queen royalty Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance, the 70s horror movie classic will be playing in over six hundred theaters in four hundred markets, just one of a number of horror rereleases to hit cinemas this year.
Meanwhile, David Gordon Green’s Halloween 2018 reboot of the 70s slasher franchise — which kickstarted Michael Myers most polarizing run in the series — is now available to stream on Netflix. 2018’s Halloween takes place 40 years after John Carpenter’s groundbreaking 1978 original and ignores every other sequel that came in between. It catches up with a post-traumatic Laurie Strode, who’s now a mother and grandmother and has been nervously awaiting Michael Myers' return for four decades. While being transferred to a maximum-security prison, Michael escapes and heads back to Haddonfield Illinois for another gruesome killing spree on Halloween night continuing in Halloween Kills.
When it arrived in theaters in 2018, the Halloween reboot was praised as the best Halloween movie since Carpenter’s original. Jamie Lee Curtis’ performance was widely acclaimed and Green’s direction of the tone and atmosphere was similarly lauded. Plus, it became a massive box-office success. But looking back on it now, 2018’s Halloween is best remembered as the beginning of the most controversial era of the franchise.
But that’s not all: two additional films in the franchise will make their return to theaters as well. Skipping over Halloween II and the divisive Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, which forgoes Michael Myers entirely, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers will make their way back to theaters for the first time since the late ‘80s.
Halloween 2018 is now streaming on Netflix. John Carpenter's Halloween returns to theaters on October 31.
