A trigger finger release is a surgical procedure designed to relieve the painful locking or catching of a finger or thumb caused by stenosing tenosynovitis, commonly known as trigger finger. The condition occurs when the tendon in the affected digit becomes inflamed or thickened, preventing smooth movement through the tendon sheath.
During the procedure, typically performed under local anesthesia, the surgeon releases the tight A1 pulley, a fibrous band that is restricting the tendon. This is done either through a small incision in the palm (open surgery) or with a needle in a minimally invasive technique (percutaneous release). The release allows the tendon to glide freely, restoring normal movement to the finger.
Trigger finger release is an outpatient procedure with a high success rate, and most patients experience significant symptom relief and improved mobility within a few weeks of surgery.
