I'm excited to share a story about a recent challenge I solved using #Excel and #PowerQuery. A friend reached out with an interesting problem: they had an Excel file with a single column of business expenses. Each cell contained a transaction date and description, with the corresponding expense amount in the cell below it. This made it difficult to analyze and understand the data at a glance. For example, filtering to see the total expenses for January caused the expense amounts to disappear, leaving nothing to add!

To tackle this, I used Power Query to align the expense amounts with their dates and descriptions and split the dates and descriptions into their own columns. This process involves adding Index Columns, using the Merge Queries command to align the data, and then using Split Columns to separate dates and descriptions. Finally, I demonstrated how to clean up unnecessary rows and load the cleaned data into a worksheet for easier analysis. This method organizes the data and allows you to refresh the query when new data is added, ensuring the analysis is always up-to-date.
