The Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century marked significant clashes between the expanding Mongol Empire and the isolated island nation. In 1274 and 1281, Kublai Khan dispatched massive fleets to conquer Japan, but both attempts were thwarted by fierce resistance and fortuitous natural phenomena. Legend holds that a typhoon, known as the "kamikaze" or "divine wind," destroyed the Mongol fleets, saving Japan from invasion. This belief in divine intervention bolstered Japanese morale and inspired the term "kamikaze" in World War II, referring to suicide attacks by Japanese pilots, who similarly saw themselves as defenders against overwhelming forces.
