This has been sitting in my folder for MONTHS now. I couldn't bring myself to upload it because I kept going back to it and second-guessing the whole thing. And for once, my doubts were not about structure or editing choices, but about the subject matter in the first place. Although I've edited my fair share of GenKill, it's always been in bits and pieces - just a slice of it, from a very specific angle. And so this one somehow felt like too much. Too much that can be misread, especially as it is set to a very popular and over-vidded song - one that's used to portray violence by timing it with the beats of the chorus (which I've tried to avoid). I sincerly hope nothing in this glamorizes violence (although some of the Marines in here do) because that's the further thing from my mind. My intention was, in fact, to do the opposite but to do so in a way that wouldn't feel like I was distorting and betraying what the show is at its core - an unsanitizied depiction of combat which, while representing moral complexities, is not meant to be a morality lesson and which certainly doesn't spoon-feed its audience about notions of right and wrong.

In the attempt to not misrepresent this show and its characters, I tried to include as much as possible of the feeling of it- and yes, that also means those lines and attitudes, and jokes especially, that really feel inappropriate or downright insensitive. And they are. And that also means holding back very little in terms of footage selection.

So yes, all of this made me very reluctant to actually upload it, letting weeks go by. I managed to get some distance from it all, waited for a time in which my feelings for GenKill were a little ... less intense. And I suppose that time is now. In fact I don't feel as attached to this edit right now, which I think it's good. Plus I watched that Rudy Reyes clip from the "Once Upon a Time in Iraq' BBC documentary, and that got me right in the stomach and made me a little sick. Another reminder of the fiction-reality divide. Although him being on GenKill is an uncomfortable overlap, so I guess that complicates matters further. The way he answered the 'Was it worth it?' question. Oh boy.

Okay, I'm getting confused again. Just. Should I even put a disclaimer about this OBVIOUSLY representing the show and that the show, while based on real and reported events, is nonetheless a show aka a fictional portrayal and not a documentary? Well.
