"Starlit Zone Fighter is a game where a loose head on drugs soars through the starlit skies shooting fruits at various air traffic, such as sleeping whales, other loose heads, and Shooter Bosses. Cool game overall."
A shoot-em-up where you can't shoot! In lieu of built-in projectiles, you instead have to catch flying fruit and spit it back out; each fruit has different properties, from the soaring strawberry to the spread-shot watermelon. Each fruit only lasts three shots, so every shot counts! Two new fruit types are introduced on the second and third stages, and an extra life is awarded for every 30 kills.
This totally changes how you approach the play space -- you have to constantly be aware of not just your own position in relation to enemies and incoming projectiles, but also where fruit is spawning, and how to maximise your usage of them. The boomerangs are particularly useful for remaining on-screen a decent length of time, as you'll often be firing shots simply to thin out incoming herds while you scout for the next ammo restock.
What makes the game a hard sell is its extreme difficulty. By default you begin with 10 lives, and I was lucky to make it to level 4 after a couple dozen tries -- I used cheats to give myself extra lives for this playthrough, ostensibly just so I could chart out the game and plot a better run... but if nobody's even recorded a complete playthrough of this, this'll do in a pinch. Somebody else take the reins, I'm not cut out for shmups!
A big part of that difficulty is the player's drifty movement. You don't stop and start on a dime like traditional space shooters, but have to account for your acceleration and deceleration. This, uh, is hell for a bullet hell shooter. Having to make sure you don't slide into harm's way increases the stress factor by at least 500%.
You can optionally play using mouse controls, where your player will slowly track towards where the cursor currently is. This seemingly eliminates the drift issue, but is an extremely unorthodox way to play and also reduces the risk of clicking outside of the game window, minimising the whole thing. Hooray!
Frustrating as it is, it's got a great feel to it and a compelling twist on convention, one I'd love to see get some attention. Lazrael's YouTube channel shows a remake was in development circa 2009, boasting completely revamped and more dynamic enemies, weapons and stages, though it doesn't appear to have been released.
