ARVO 2017 – Toyos Clinic presents research on The Q for Dry Eye Disease
Recently several companies have rushed to find treatments for Dry Eye Disease, DED. We have been researching several ways to improve the condition. Our first major discovery was Intense Pulse Light, IPL. IPL is now being utilized successfully by 100s of surgeons all over the world. IPL utilizes certain wavelengths of light to stimulate the meibomian glands to function normally in a process called photomodulation. It is an in office procedure performed by a doctor. In 2006 I began thinking that maybe we could find a wavelength of light that could be safely used at home to help DED. In 2007 we began testing specific Light Emitting Diode, LED, technology for DED. The name we decided to give this at home technology was The Quantum. Patients who were involved in our research would come in and go through a series of tests and then have their Quantum treatment. Pretty soon patients started calling The Quantum, The Q. I loved it because we had just returned from a family trip and the kids loved saying British phrases like, “let’s go stand in the queue”.
We spent 7 years studying different wavelengths and energy levels and combinations of wavelengths before we found the best one to help the signs and symptoms of DED. Today we will be presenting some of our research on The Q at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, ARVO. We are demonstrating that The Q when used at least twice a week on the lids will improve the signs and symptoms of DED through the process of photomodulation on the meibomian glands. Unlike IPL The Q is a handheld device that you can safely apply to the upper and lower lid margin at home. Our research has shown that a specific wavelength and energy level works best.
We have a final product, patent, and over 1000 patients in our clinic and four beta test sites who have been using it for the last 3 years. Patients have reported marvelous results with no adverse events. We use The Q in conjunction with IPL as maintenance therapy. The Q has to be used at least twice a week but I have patients that use it daily. I do see that the patients that use it daily have better meibum secretion and ocular surface. I am also finding that even shorter treatment times but more frequently is better than longer treatment but less frequently demonstrating that consistent low energy to the glands leads to better function. Both my wife and I use The Q. It is handheld and easy to carry around on trips helping patients with DED who frequently travel. I have not licensed The Q at this point because I do want to keep this in the hands of physicians to patients. But at some point I will want more patients to have the opportunity for improvement of their DED. I doctor thanked me at ASCRS stating, “…thanks for training me on IPL … I was not a believer but now seeing for myself how well patients are doing ….”. Well if you love IPL then you are going to love The Q.
