After properly situating the patient and blood pressure cuff, the following sequence should be used to measure blood pressure manually:
1) Rapidly inflate the cuff to a pressure of 180 mm Hg
2) Gradually release air from the cuff (~3 mm Hg per second)
3) Take note of the initial knocking (Korotkoff) sound, which corresponds to systolic blood pressure
4) Take note of the final Korotkoff sound, which corresponds to diastolic blood pressure
5) Rapidly deflate the cuff following the final Korotkoff sound
6) Repeat blood pressure measurement in the patient’s other arm
Remember: systolic blood pressure above 180 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure above 110 mm Hg require immediate medical attention.
