Processing iPS cells to make dopamine neurons
Researchers working in Professor Richard Wade-Martins' lab growing dopaminergic neurons grown from samples taken from people with and without Parkinson's.
A major limitation for research in our field is that the brain cells most affected in people with Parkinson’s (dopamine neurons) are deep inside the brain and are not accessible while a person is alive.
To overcome this, we make use of a recently developed technology (induced pluripotent stem cells -iPSCs) that allows us to grow dopamine producing neurons in a dish via the skin cells kindly donated by our participants in skin biopsies.
