Flame Test! How do I know what cation is present? - Ms. Frizzle Explains
In this video, I conduct a flame test to figure out what a mystery sample from my lab is. I also explain how flame tests work, as far as the electrons are concerned.
To conduct the experiment in this video, I briefly soaked toothpicks in various ionic compounds, all with chlorine at the anion, and tested the color to determine the cation in an unknown sample.
Understanding what’s happening at the atomic level helps us understand why we are making certain observations in the world around us.
